American Reconstruction Practice Test

White Southern opposition to Reconstruction grew from a bundle of threats to their established social, political, and economic order. Losing political power mattered a lot—reconstruction policies and federal enforcement shifted political authority away from the white planter elites who had dominated Southern governments for generations, especially as Black men and some Republicans gained a voice in the new political landscape. Economic disruption also fueled resentment: the end of slavery upended the labor system the planters relied on, and the South faced the costs of rebuilding after the war, with new labor relationships and sequences of debt and credit that undermined the old economic model. Then there was fear of social change—the possibility that African Americans would gain civil rights and political influence challenged the racial hierarchy that white Southerners had long enforced. Add in a conviction that federal governments and constitutional amendments were intruding on local affairs, and you have a powerful mix of motives for opposition. Some people did support federal authority or civil rights, and others accepted Reconstruction’s policies, but widespread resistance mostly grew from these intertwined fears and losses, not from enthusiasm for the new order.
